Comparative reproductive anatomy in the South African giant land snails (Gastropoda: Pulmonata: Achatinidae) Naturalis
Mead, A.R..
The history and current taxonomic status of 62 nominal taxa are revised that have been associated in the literature with the subgenus Tholachatina Bequaert, 1950, of genus Archachatina Albers, 1850, and the genus Cochlitoma Férussac, 1821, in the land snail family Achatinidae Swainson, 1840. Tangible, reliable characters have been found in the detailed features of the reproductive anatomy in this family. The results of comparative anatomical study convincingly reflect phylogeny in contrast to the comparative study of only the shell characters. This latter more strongly reflects the effects of the intrinsically variable environment over time. In the present study, both sets of characters are needed to refine identification. Change, and therefore...

Complete Mitochondrial Genomes Reveal Population-Level Patterns in the Widespread Red Alga Gelidiella fanii (Gelidiales, Rhodophyta) ArchiMer
Boo, Ga Hun; Zubia, Mayalen; Hughey, Jeffery R.; Sherwood, Alison R.; Fujii, Mutue T.; Boo, Sung Min; Miller, Kathy Ann.
Although complete mitogenomic data have been widely applied in human and other animal population studies, they are extremely limited for florideophycean red algal populations. Gelidiella fanii is a recently described rhodophyta, previously misidentified as G. acerosa, a cosmopolitan agar-yielding species from tropical to subtropical waters. To decipher patterns in genetic diversity and geographic distribution for G. fanii, we obtained 10 complete mitogenomes including two outgroups, G. acerosa and G. flabella. The mitogenomes ranged in size from 25,223 to 25,281 bp and had 48 genes, which are similar in general structure, gene order and content, and presence of a group II intron. Phylogenomic analysis revealed that G. fanii was monophyletic and clearly...

Contemporary distributions of Panurginus species and subspecies in Europe (Apoidea: Andrenidae: Panurginae) Naturalis
Pattiny, S..
Contemporary distributions of Panurginus species and subspecies in Europe (Apoidea: Andrenidae: Panurginae) The largest number of Old World Panurginus Nylander, 1848 species is distributed in the West- Palaearctic. The genus is absent in Africa and rather rare in the East-Palaearctic. Warncke (1972, 1987), who is the main author treating Palaearctic Panurginae in the last decades, subdivided Panurginus into a small number of species, including two principal taxa admitting for each a very large number of subspecies: Panurginus brullei (Lepeletier, 1841) and Panurginus montanus Giraud, 1861. Following recent works, the two latter are in fact complexes of closely related species. In the West-Palaearctic context, distributions of certain species implied in...

Contribution to an inventory of the freshwater planarians of Australia and New Zealand (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Dugesiidae), with distribution maps of the species examined Naturalis
Sluys, Ronald; Kawakatsu, Masaharu.
An account is given of 13 species of freshwater planarians from the family Dugesiidae, based on samples from new localities in New Zealand and Australia; these include four newly described and one problematic species. In the case of three species, the material described represents the second series of specimens available since the material used in the original descriptions of these species, as a result of which our understanding of the morphology of the animals can be expanded. In other cases, the new material also contributed to a more detailed understanding of the anatomy of the species. The study concludes with detailed distribution maps for the species examined, including not only the new distributional records described in the paper but also...

Contribution to the knowledge of the Proseriata (Platyhelminthes: Seriata) from eastern Australia. II. Genera Pseudomonocelis Meixner, 1943 and Acanthopseudomonocelis n. g Naturalis
Curini-Galletti, Marco; Cannon, Lester.
Two monocelid species with simplex copulatory bulbs and postpharyngeal ovaries have been found in E. Australia. One of them presents a combination of characters not found in any of the known genera of the Monocelididae, and the new genus Acanthopseudomonocelis is proposed for it. The new genus is characterized by the presence of four stylet-bearing accessory organs and by an internal vagina; it is related to Pseudomonocelis. The other species, Pseudomonocelis schockaerti n. sp., is characterized by a complex bursa-vagina system, and by a highly muscular penial organ and male antrum. It is closely related to P. pardii Schockaert & Martens, 1987, from Somaliland. Two possibly additional species of the genus Pseudomonocelis, not found in a mature stage,...

Coptobrycon bilineatus (Ellis, 1911) (Characiformes: Characidae): redescription and comments on its phylogenetic relationships Neotropical Ichthyology
Langeani,Francisco; Serra,Jane Piton.
Coptobrycon bilineatus (Ellis, 1911) is redescribed on the basis of specimens from the District of Paranapiacaba, Municipality of Santo André, upper rio Tietê, and additional ones recently collected in a small coastal river system of Serra do Mar, very near the headwaters of the rio Tietê. The genus was compared to other Characidae lacking a supraorbital, and it seems to be more phylogenetically related to Grundulus based on the possession of various putative apomorphic character states related to: the absence of a rhinosphenoid and fourth, fifth (sometimes) and sixth infraorbitals; nasal pores separated; nares with up to six nasal lamellae; cephalic laterosensory system poorly developed on supraorbital and infraorbital series; and a globose scapula....

Crustáceos no cerrito Ariano Souza, Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul e distribuição de Callinectes sapidus (Brachyura, Portunidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Santos,Cléverson Ranniéri M. dos; D'Incao,Fernando.
While all species of the genus Callinectes Stimpson, 1860 have a continuous distribution on the Atlantic coast of the Americas, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 is the only one with disjunct distribution. Considering that this species was introduced in Europe and Japan, it has been suggested that the occurrence of C. sapidus on the southern coast of Brazil was due to the transport by ballast water. In the archaeological site Ariano Souza, located in the estuary of the Patos Lagoon (southern Brazil), remains of crustaceans, including claws of approximately two thousand years ago, were found. A preliminary analysis of this material showed Callinectes chelae. Because this archaeological site is located inside the estuary, it has been hypothesized that these...

Cryptic diversity within the harmful dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea in coastal Chinese waters is related to differentiated ecological niches ArchiMer
Luo, Zhaohe; Yang, Weidong; Leaw, Chui Pin; Pospelova, Vera; Bilien, Gwenael; Liow, Guat Ru; Lim, Po Teen; Gu, Haifeng.
Blooms of the harmful dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea are responsible for the mass mortality of fish and invertebrates in coastal waters. This cosmopolitan species includes several genetically differentiated clades. Four clonal cultures were established by isolating single cells from Xiamen Harbour (the East China Sea) for morphological and genetic analyses. The cultures displayed identical morphology but were genetically different, thus revealing presence of cryptic diversity in the study area. New details of the apical structure complex of Akashiwo sanguinea were also found. To investigate whether the observed cryptic diversity was related to environmental differentiation, 634 cells were obtained from seasonal water samples collected from 2008 to 2012....

Cryptic variation and recent bipolar range expansion within the Stumped-Toed Gecko Gehyra mutilata across Indian and Pacific Ocean islands Naturalis
Rocha, S.; Ineich, I.; Harris, D. James.
With an impressively wide distribution, Gehyra mutilata is present on almost all Indian and Pacific Ocean islands and in large regions of Southeast Asia and Indonesia. Mitochondrial sequence data (~500 bp) from individuals covering large parts of its (mainly insular) distribution reveals deep cryptic variation and strong geographic structure, with two well differentiated lineages. Molecular data also reveals that the wide Indian and Pacific insular distribution of Gehyra is very recent and, at least across the Indian Ocean islands, most probably the result of human-aided dispersal, as no variation within this lineage was found. Further research is needed to determine geographic patterns of variation across Southeast Asia, the level of genetic variation,...

Current perspectives on the evolution of birds Naturalis
Ericson, P.G.P..
The paper summarizes the current understanding of the evolution and diversification of birds. New insights into this field have mainly come from two fundamentally different, but complementary sources of information: the many newly discovered Mesozoic bird fossils and the wealth of genetic analyses of living birds at various taxonomic levels. The birds have evolved from theropod dinosaurs from which they can be defined by but a few morphological characters. The early evolutionary history of the group is characterized by the extinctions of many major clades by the end of the Cretaceous, and by several periods of rapid radiations and speciation. Recent years have seen a growing consensus about the higher- level relationships among living birds, at least as...

Decapod crustaceans from the Neogene of the Caribbean: diversity, distribution and prospectus Naturalis
Collins, J.S.H.; Portell, R.W.; Donovan, S.K..
The Neogene decapod crustaceans are reviewed from Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, Anguilla, Barbados, Carriacou, Costa Rica, Cuba, Florida, Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, St. Kitts, Tintamare Island, Trinidad and Venezuela. The most widely distributed taxa, both stratigraphically and geographically, are callianassids and Calappa (both with easily identifiable dactyli), and portunids. The latter include eleven genera in the study area; of these, Callinectes, Euphylax and Portunus are known from the Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene of the Caribbean. The two occurrences of scleractinian-inhabiting crab faunas, the Lower Miocene Montpelier Formation of Jamaica and the Pleistocene Coral Rock of Barbados, show...

Description of males of Phallotorynus pankalos Lucinda, Rosa & Reis, 2005 and reappraisal of Phallotorynus species relationships (Teleostei: Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Lucinda,Paulo H. F.; Graça,Weferson J. da.
Recently discovered male specimens of Phallotorynus pankalos are described and diagnosed from males of congener species on the basis of gonopodial morphology, color pattern and number of dorsal and anal-fin rays. The phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships among Phallotorynus species is reappraised with the inclusion of P. pankalos. Phallotorynus pankalos is hypothesized as sister to P. jucundus, a clade sister to P. victoriae or to a clade composed of P. dispilos and P. psittakos. Biogeography of Phallotorynus species is discussed, and it is suggested: (1) an early basal split between the rio Paraíba do Sul drainage and the Paraná-Paraguay system, separating P. fasciolatus from the ancestor of the remaining Phallotorynus species followed by a dispersal...

Determinants of geographical distribution in Atlantic Forest species of Drymophila (Aves: Thamnophilidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rajão,Henrique; Cerqueira,Rui; Lorini,Maria Lucia.
Climate, altitude and vegetation are usually considered as limiting factors in plant and animal distribution. Among vertebrates, climate and vegetation have consistently been considered as major determinants of geographical distributions. Here we analyzed the role of climate and the vegetation in limiting the geographical range of Atlantic Forest species of Drymophila Swainson, 1824 and assessed the performance of discriminant analysis to model the distribution of sympatric taxa. From each empirical point (locality) we recorded the values for nine climatic variables and the type of vegetation. The climatic data were obtained from a climate database elaborated by the Laboratório de Vertebrados and vegetation data from the ecoregions digital map of Latin...
